Verb Conjugation - Multiple tenses / 1st person (French)

See below for a selection of pdf worksheets which you can view online, save, print etc. The worksheets are based on items entered into a text grid using the Grid Match component of TaskMagic3.

The worksheets below were printed from TaskMagic3 using doPDF - http://www.dopdf.com - a free program which adds "print to pdf" to your printers list.

Before we get to the worksheets, let me just tell you that the exercises are based on items placed in a text grid on the Grid Match edit screen (below):

This works by pairing up the row and column headers (in yellow above) and matching them to the text items in the appropriate grid squares. So based on the information typed in for the above file, we have prompts and answers which look like this:

[do / make] [I was ___ing] >>> je faisais

In the examples on this page, all rows and columns have been used, making a total of 60 items (12 x 5). But you can make exercises like these based on far fewer rows and columns. The minimum requirement is 3 rows and 3 columns, making a total of 9 items.

Now to the worksheets:

Blank Grid

Fr Verbsmulti1stpers Grid

The blank grid can be used for all sorts of things.

Students can use them to play speaking games, e.g. 3 in a row; Battleships. Students play in pairs (or groups of three) and provide spoken responses appropriate for each square in order to place their mark on the grid (or to attempt to hit the opponent's ship in Battleships). This requires the teacher to allow all students to be playing / speaking at once, so it can get pretty noisy. The teacher's job is to circulate and monitor (making sure answers are correct / correctly pronounced, and that students are using the target language...).

At a very basic level, you can use the grid as the basis for listening, reading and writing activities:

Listening: Questions 1 to 10. T says question number, then a phrase (e.g. j'ai appris). SS have to write the number in the correct box on the grid.

Reading: Questions 1 to 10. On the board, T writes question number, then a phrase (e.g. je vais aller). SS have to write the number in the correct box on the grid.

Writing: T writes the numbers 1 to 10 at random points in the grid. SS have to write the correct phrase (or an extended version, puting it into a complete sentence). Or you could ask them to write the correct verb form in each box.

Matching

Fr Verbsmulti1stpers Match

This is just a case of matching the item on the left with the item on the right (e.g. by numbering the item on the right). The example above has 60 items, which stretch on to 4 pages. You can have a maximum of 16 items per page, so 24 items would place 12 items on each page (and 45 items = 3 x 15) etc. You can choose how many of the available items to print, so if you want a one page worksheet based on the above, simply set TaskMagic to print 16 items.

Multi-Match

fr_verbsmulti1stpers_multich

A multiple choice activity based on one correct match and two incorrect macthes for each question. (Maximum 16 items per page, as above). You can choose how many of the available items to print, so if you want a one page worksheet based on the above, simply set TaskMagic to print 16 items.

Pairs Cards

fr_verbsmulti1stpers_pairscards

These should be cut up into individual squares and can be used for kinaesthetic matching (i.e. SS move the cards around on their desk to place the matching items in pairs) or for a memory games (which in this case might be a bit of a challenge as there are a total of 120 cards - but you can set TaskMagic to print a reduced number of cards). I'm sure there are other card games that can be played - essentially you have 5 'suits' each with 12 cards in the above example.

Write

Fr Verbsmulti1stpers Write

The shape of the required answer is shown next to each question / prompt. (Maximum 16 items per page, as above). You can choose how many of the available items to print, so if you want a one page worksheet based on the above, simply set TaskMagic to print 16 items.

Dominoes

Fr Verbsmulti1stpers Dominoes

These are to be cut out as dominoes so that students can play in pairs or small groups. You can choose how many of the available items to print, so if you want a game based on fewer dominoes, simply set TaskMagic to print the number that you want.
